Office health & safety
Course Overview
Offices are generally considered to be relatively safe and without risks to health. However, every year office workers suffer injuries and ill health associated with poor practices and working conditions. Millions of working days are also lost, which has a serious impact on profitability.Employers are required to prevent or control exposure to hazards in offices such as those causing work-related upper limb disorders, stress and manual handling injuries. This course is designed to enable employers to comply with the law. The relevant legal requirements will be reviewed, including the duties on employers to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, provide safe systems of work, undertake risk assessments, appoint competent persons, install safety management systems and implement procedures for reporting injuries and ill health arising from work.
Delegates will be provided with advice and specimen documentation, firstly, to enable them to undertake risk assessments required under, for example, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 and, secondly, to carry out various forms of safety monitoring, such as audits and inspections, of their offices. In particular, we examine the duties of employers with respect to the tort of negligence and under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
The course is presented by one of our two speakers:
Jeremy Stranks is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, well known as a consultant, author, trainer and expert witness in the areas of health and safety. He is a founder member of the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health and former chief examiner.
Caroline Harmer, a lively and well-known speaker on legal matters. A founder member of The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, she has wide knowledge in the area of health and safety, and lectures regularly on the subject. Caroline is in practice as a barrister.
